Thoracic outlet syndrome can mimic carpal tunnel

Rehab Regs, February 24, 2005

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a little-known and poorly understood condition, which is why many family doctors sometimes diagnose it as carpal tunnel syndrome, according to The Houston Chronicle. The thoracic outlet is the narrow space between the collar bone and the first rib--a region crowded with blood vessels, nerves, and muscles. TOS, which can be caused by trauma, disease, or congenital abnormality, puts pressure on these nerves or blood vessels and can result in pain, numbness, or weakness, reported the Chronicle.
