Indiana center receives $1M to research amputee rehab

Rehab Regs, February 17, 2005

The U.S. Defense Department has awarded $1 million to the Indiana Center of Rehabilitation Sciences and Engineering Research (ICRSER) to research the rehabilitation of soldiers injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to University Wire. In Iraq alone, more than 10,622 U.S. personnel have been wounded since March 2003. Much of the study will concentrate on the rehabilitation of patients who have lost limbs, and will include tracking the rehabilitation of these patients and integrating them back into a healthy environment. ICRSER had to complete preliminary research before seeking the grant, and spent approximately $3 million a year on machines to balance and fit prosthetics, which were used to compile data on limb replacement, reported University Wire.
