Penmanship: It isn’t what it used to be

Rehab Regs, January 27, 2005

Nowadays, children are exploring the keyboard in kindergarten. In the first grade, they are editing simple text, and by the third grade, many students are expected to know how to type an e-mail. As a result, mastering printing and cursive writing has fallen by the wayside, according to the Edmonton (Canada) Journal. Some school systems in Canada are partnering with occupational therapists to promote handwriting and penmanship as valued skills. Ultimately, children will be taught technological and information literacy skills alongside traditional numeracy and literacy, reported the Journal.
