Athletes can avoid stress fractures

Rehab Regs, December 16, 2004

Some athletes may be able to avoid stress fractures in their feet if their doctors use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to look for the physical changes that often precede the breaks. The scans, which could be done during preseason physicals, can help prevent injuries that ruin college and professional careers, according to findings presented last week at a conference of the Radiological Society of North America. By using MRIs, if doctors see a problem, they can prescribe devices to protect the foot or refer the athlete to physical therapy to avoid surgery.
