Home treadmills a danger to children

Rehab Regs, December 2, 2004

Treadmills may be a great way to bring rehab from the clinic to the home, but they can also be a potential hazard to households with children. Young children are at risk for friction burns from moving treadmills, according to the Journal of Burn Care and Rehabilitation. In a recent study to determine the treatment impact of treadmill friction injuries in children, researchers found that 4% (or 48) of pediatric patients under six years of age at a burn center between 1997 and 2002 were being treated for treadmill injuries. The surface of the patients' hands were the most common site of injury, and medical costs associated with treadmill friction injuries averaged $2,385 per child, reported the Journal.
