Study lacks faith in physiotherapy

Rehab Regs, October 7, 2004

Physiotherapy may relieve back pain no more than simply staying active, according to the British Medical Journal. Researchers at the University of Warwick, in the United Kingdom, spent a year monitoring 280 patients with low back pain, reported NewScientist. Half of the group received regular physiotherapy, including joint manipulation, stretching and strengthening treatments, and heat and cold treatments. The other half had one session with a physiotherapist, who gave the patients advice on staying active, without providing any treatment. Participants in the group receiving regular physiotherapy were more likely to report that they felt better, but when patients' health was scored with a standardized questionnaire, both groups had similar improvements in mobility and reductions in pain, reported NewScientist.
