Female athletes spell injury "A-C-L"
Rehab Regs, September 23, 2004
Due to various anatomical differences, women are more likely to suffer tears of their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) than men, according to the Fort Wayne [IN] News Sentinel. An ACL tear is a common occurrence at all levels of sporting activities, and approximately 80,000 people tear an ACL each year--56,000 athletically. The surgery and rehabilitation for each injury costs an estimated $25,000 and takes an average of six months. Some researchers believe that women's wider hips, and the subsequent sharper angle from the hip joint to the knee puts more pressure on the lower joint, causing an ACL tear, according to the News Sentinel.
