Medicare payments to CORFs highest in FL

Rehab Regs, September 23, 2004

Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Facilities (CORFs) in Florida were the most expensive Medicare outpatient therapy provider in 2002, according to a new study released by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The study, which was requested by the Senate Finance Committee, found that per-patient therapy payments to CORFs were two to three times higher than payments to other facility-based providers, according to PT Bulletin Online. This difference may be due to a higher volume of services and more intensive services per visit. GAO also determined that patient characteristics such as age, sex, disability, and prior hospitalization did not account for the higher payments. In the study, GAO also urged CMS to review a large number of CORF claims to reduce the risk of improper billing, according to the Bulletin.
