September 22 is National Backpack Awareness Day
Rehab Regs, September 16, 2004
On Wednesday, September 22, the American Occupational Therapy Association is sponsoring National School Backpack Awareness Day, an annual educational event to call attention to health problems in children caused by backpacks that are too heavy or worn improperly. Nearly 5,000 emergency room visits result from injuries related to backpacks and bookbags, according to the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission. The growing awareness of potential health problems to children has resulted in increased medical research, more media coverage, and proposed legislation in California and New Jersey to address backpack weight and student health.
