Therapist lands a spot on Olympic massage team

Rehab Regs, August 26, 2004

After graduating with a degree in physical therapy, Stan Grod probably wouldn't have predicted leading an Olympic team. But Grod, 40, of Burbank, CA is in Greece, kneading the knots from elite athletes' bodies, according to the Associated Press (AP). Treatments alleviate pain caused by conditions ranging from shin splints to carpal tunnel syndrome to pulled Achilles tendons. Grod and his crew are challenged to find the perfect balance between kneading too hard and causing soreness and kneading too lightly and providing minimal benefit. Olympic massage therapists are also often under pressure to perform quickly, often diagnosing athletes' trouble spots in under 20 minutes, according to the AP.
