Inpatient rehab access threatened under rule

Rehab Regs, July 22, 2004

Patients in need of important inpatient medical rehabilitation services will find access to this care threatened under Medicare's new "75% Rule," according to the American Hospital Association (AHA) and the American Medical Rehabilitation Providers Association (AMRPA). A recent survey conducted by the two associations finds that upon implementation of the rule, 40% of hospitals will be forced to turn away rehab patients, and almost 25% of rehabilitation facilities will not meet the required standards in the first year, forcing them to discontinue services or close. This estimate jumps to 80% in the fourth year of implementation.
