Laptops a pain in the neck

Rehab Regs, July 15, 2004

Classroom computer use may be putting children at risk for musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), according to the Sydney [Australia] Morning Herald. A West Australian study has found that 60% of children using laptops for an average of 3.2 hours a day reported physical discomfort, an early warning sign of MSDs. However, few educational institutions address ergonomic issues for children in technology settings. MSDs include neck tension, repetitive strain injuries, and occupational overuse syndrome. According to the study, children are most vulnerable to injury during puberty because the body changes so much at that time.
