Intense rehab may benefit elderly

Rehab Regs, July 8, 2004

An Australian study found that intense rehabilitation programs speed recovery in elderly patients, according to the Bayside Leader [Australia]. Traditionally, patients over 75 usually receive two 30-minute rehabilitation sessions, while younger patients receive at least three hours of therapy a day. In the study, older patients were given intense therapy treatments including physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, occupational therapy, and when needed, had sessions with speech pathologists. During the study, 90% of patients over 75 went home with only 10 returning to the hospital for complaints unrelated to the rehabilitation.
