Some PTs need written contracts with SNFs
Rehab Regs, June 10, 2004
Physical therapists who provide services to Medicare beneficiaries in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) as independent contractors must have written contracts in place with the SNFs to receive reimbursement, according to PT Bulletin Online. The clarification was issued by CMS this month in its revised Manual Instructions to "clarify requirements that must be met in order for a Medicare skilled nursing facility (SNF) to have a valid 'arrangement' in effect with an outside supplier." The revision is intended to respond to what CMS described as "problematic situations in which a SNF resident receives services that are subject to consolidated billing from an outside entity [such as a therapy contractor], in the absence of a valid arrangement between that entity and the SNF."
