Rhode Island health department sued over reimbursement

Rehab Regs, June 3, 2004

A temporary Superior Court order has found that the Rhode Island Health Department can't deny reimbursements to four organizations that provide certain health services to children with special needs, according to Genetics and Environmental Health Week. The agencies sued the state for money owed for occupational, physical, and speech-language therapies under the "early intervention" program. The program provides therapeutic and educational services to children with disabilities or developmental delays. The state claims that it did not stop reimbursing clients, but changed its policy in February to begin asking families with private health insurance to use their personal plans to cover these services. The state is currently reviewing the lawsuit.
