From face-lifts to voice lifts

Rehab Regs, May 12, 2004

In an effort to not only look younger, but sound younger, too, patients are visiting a Pittsburgh doctor to have their vocal cords tightened or plumped with fat or cartilage. According to the Sunday Telegraph [London], the procedure is also sought after by individuals with voice disorders that can cause sudden changes in volume or loss of vocal power. The treatment is often accompanied by speech therapy, especially for those who are prone to these functional disorders--like teachers--who find that avoiding shouting and limiting time spent on the telephone also helps avoid further vocal cord damage.
