CMS releases long-awaited 75% rule for IRFs
Rehab Regs, May 6, 2004
CMS released a final rule in April, revising the criteria for hospitals to be eligible for Medicare payment as inpatient rehab facilities. Also known as the "75%" rule, the regulation will phase in over three years a requirement that 75% of a hospital's admissions must be patients with specified medical conditions that require extensive rehabilitation. It also makes additional changes to the list of qualifying medical conditions. According to PT Bulletin Online, the final rule will be published in the May 7 Federal Register and the new standards will become effective for cost reporting periods beginning July 1, 2004.
