Home modifications continue to be an OT focus

Rehab Regs, April 29, 2004

As the percentage of elderly Americans continues to rise, the need for home modification is becoming essential to help senior citizens lead independent lives, according to Nursing Home & Elder Business Week. Environmental modifications and adaptive equipment have been part of OT since the field originated and now involve low cost changes like grab bars in the shower, hand held showers, extensions on light switches, or replacing round doorknobs with lever style ones. More extensive modifications include lowering kitchen counters, installing stair glides, widening doorways, and adding first floor bathrooms.
