Injury prevention 101: Stretch and strengthen
Rehab Regs, April 22, 2004
For athletes, an aggressive preseason stretching, strengthening, and conditioning program can mean the difference between an active summer and a season spent watching ESPN. Arm and tendon health are a major concern to baseball players, especially pitchers, according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Mild inflammation--also known as tendonitis--to full rotator cuff tears can occur with improper use. The best way to avoid these injuries is to warm up as the weather does the same, with a simple game of catch in the backyard. Start throwing gently from 10 feet and increase gradually all the way up to striking distance from centerfield to home plate.
