Schools, OTs need to make a rehab connection
Rehab Regs, April 15, 2004
Many school districts are having difficulty finding and keeping occupational therapy staff, according to The Special Educator newsletter. The reasons for this shortfall include competition from other environments and a lack of effective marketing practices to attract OTs to a school setting. Other OT challenges include high caseloads, small staffs, not feeling part of the individualized education program (IEP) team, and feeling their professional advice is undervalued. The American Occupational Therapy Association recommends encouraging OTs not to wait until IEP team leaders approach them about attending meetings.
