Rehab on the chopping block in Maine
Rehab Regs, March 18, 2004
Proposed cuts to MaineCare, Maine's Medicaid program, are designed to carve almost $62 million out of the program's budget for the upcoming fiscal year, according to the Bangor [ME] Daily News. The administration of Gov. John Baldacci says the reductions are needed to balance the state budget and close a widening gap in Medicaid costs. If the proposed cuts are approved, hundreds of Mainers will lose access to rehabilitation and support services, including physical therapy and speech and hearing services. The budget shortfall of $138 million in Medicaid costs will be alleviated by tightening the range of services covered, stringently limiting some programs and services, and totally eliminating others.
