Rehab patients say "charge it"

Rehab Regs, March 11, 2004

Beginning this summer, UnitedHealth Group plans to issue patient identification cards that look a lot like MasterCards, complete with logo, according to BusinessWeek. But the cards will be good only for healthcare purchases such as visits to the physical therapist or physician, prescriptions or eyeglasses. Because MasterCard requires that only banks be allowed to issue credit cards, UnitedHealth has set one up, naming it Exante. Cardholders will be able to make payments out of flexible spending accounts, medical savings accounts and healthcare savings accounts. The cards will also let doctors and therapists verify patient eligibility and provide information about co-pays.
