Following surgery, ACL patients are encouraged to rehab aggressively to recover successfully, according to the Dayton Daily News [OH]. Because the first six months are key to overcoming injury, patients are encouraged to commit to rehab--including range-of-motion exercises that begin almost immediately after surgery. Experts say this is a major difference from 20 years ago when ACL patients began rehab more slowly and often required a full year of therapy before recovering completely. Now, many athletes who undergo the surgery and accompanying rehab return to competition within three to four months.
