Rehab patients play a happy tune

Rehab Regs, January 30, 2004

A 10-week pulmonary rehabilitation program at an Illinois hospital has added harmonica instruction to its therapy regimen with rave reviews from patients, according to the American Medical Rehabilitation Providers Association. Patients are encouraged to practice daily at home and often play together at their "easy breathers" support group meetings. According to the therapists, playing simple songs on the harmonica on a regular basis leads to increased lung capacity and strengthening of the diaphragm. It also helps patients feel better psychologically and enables them to increase their social activities, which reduces depression caused by their illness.
