Women-only gym fad gets Americans active

Rehab Regs, January 16, 2004

The popularity of gyms that offer 30-minute circuit training for women such as Curves International is skyrocketing--and prompting an influx of copycat facilities. These gyms offer an alternative to more intimidating gyms for those who are either self-conscious about their bodies or unfamiliar with how to use the available equipment. According to the Chicago Tribune, these women-only gyms encourage females to incorporate physical activity into their daily or weekly routines, but the circuit routine can be limiting and some participants may become bored. Some of the newly operational gym chains like Ladies Workout Express and Slim and Tone have begun to add fitness accessories to their workouts, including stability balls, elastic bands and free weights, which help prevent plateaus and burnout.
