Federal panel approves TKR surgery

Rehab Regs, December 22, 2003

A federal panel has confirmed that total knee replacement (TKR) surgery is a safe and highly effective treatment for patients with joint failure caused by osteoarthritis and all types of inflammatory arthritis, according to a press release from the American Medical Rehabilitation Providers Association. The 11-member panel, convened by the National Institutes of Health in early December, concluded that there appears to be rapid and substantial improvement in close to 90% of patients' pain, functional status, and overall health-related quality of life in both short- and long-term studies. About 300,000 TKR surgeries are performed each year. Traditionally, patients between 60 and 75 years of age were considered to be the best candidates for TKR, but in the past 20 years, candidacy for the surgery has grown to include both younger and older patients.
