Speech therapy benefits Down Syndrome children

Rehab Regs, December 18, 2003

Parents of Down Syndrome children in the Vancouver, Canada area had been requesting a speech language therapy program for years, representatives from the Down Syndrome Research Foundation told the Vancouver Sun. In response to the demand, 43 local children benefited from a two-week speech language program held this year, sponsored by the foundation. The program helped these youngsters overcome communication obstacles due to hearing loss, differences in brain development and low muscle tone. According to the Sun, the positive results of the program include the confidence participants develop when they can more easily communicate with their classmates. The foundation hopes to run a similar program next year and make it available to more children due to high demand.
