Farmers find support through PT program

Rehab Regs, December 18, 2003

Every year, about 200 farm workers in Illinois are disabled in accidents, according to the Associated Press (AP). To help these agricultural workers, Carle Therapy Service of Urbana, IL and AgrAbility, a nonprofit Decatur IL-based organization that is part of the Illinois Easter Seals Society, has created a physical therapy program, which makes house calls and promotes independence for agricultural workers with disabilities. In addition to the opportunity to work with a physical therapist, farmers can also receive help from AgrAbility to find funding for equipment modifications. According to the AP, most modifications and therapy services are covered by insurance plans, and some participants can also get assistance from the state's Department of Human Services. To be eligible, a farmer must have a disabling condition that interferes with his or her job, and a physician's referral.
