CMS wasn't kidding about power wheelchair abuse
Rehab Regs, December 18, 2003
The Medicare Learning Network at CMS has issued a Provider Alert detailing new initiatives to supplement a September 2003 plan targeted at power wheelchair abuse in the Medicare program. This policy will require, for the first time, that a medical provider see the patient before prescribing a wheelchair or scooter. As part of the crackdown, CMS will continue to aggressively scrutinize all new applications for supplier numbers and will also review supplier enrollment standards, increase efforts to educate physicians and beneficiaries about the wheelchair benefit, and enhance current coverage and medical review policies the ensure Medicare reviews for only wheelchairs that are legitimately needed.
