Rehab clinic owner indicted for false Medicare billing
Rehab Regs, December 4, 2003
William Harris Taft, Jr., the owner of a six-clinic chain of physical therapy centers based in Charlotte, NC, has been indicted on charges of using false billing to defraud Medicare and health insurance companies, according to the Associated Press (AP). The indictment states that Taft ordered physical therapists and staff members to make claims for unperformed or unnecessary procedures. He is also charged with permitting rehab aides to perform unsupervised physical therapy procedures on patients when licensed physical therapists were absent--a violation of North Carolina law. This practice is also illegal in South Carolina, where one of Taft's Rehab Fitness Inc. clinics is located. Taft has been charged with one count of conspiring to defraud the United States, 20 counts of making false claims against the government and 18 counts of making false statements relating to a health care matter, the AP reported.
