Therapy cap starts July 1
Rehab Regs, February 13, 2003
Ending speculation, CMS issued a program memo last week announcing that the therapy cap--which limits the amount of outpatient PT, OT, and speech therapy reimbursable under Medicare--will begin July 1. CMS stated that the Common Working File will track claims with dates of service on or after July 1, according to PM AB-03-018. The agency applied an economic index to the original, $1,500 cap limit, which boosted the cap up to $1,590 per beneficiary. Although the cap's original start date was January 1, CMS attributed a last-minute delay to computer system problems that made it impossible to track the amount of therapies delivered per beneficiary.
