DMEPOS competitive bidding explained

The Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) made limited changes to the DMEPOS Competitive Bidding Program that affected the Round 1 bidding. Although the changes don’t affect rehab providers specifically, many providers are trying to understand the DMEPOS system and how to use it to help their patients. The DMEPOS Competitive Bidding Program was established by the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003, also called the Medicare Modernization Act, or MMA, to lower out-of-pocket costs and savings for the Medicare program, according to information CMS released in January. Under this program, bids submitted by DMEPOS suppliers are evaluated and used to establish single-payment amounts for certain DMEPOS items in competitive bidding areas, according to CMS.
