HHS announces physical activity guidelines

Rehab Regs, October 17, 2008

On October 7, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the physical activity guidelines for Americans, reports an HHS press release. The guidelines are based on detailed scientific research and are more thorough than the 2008 physical activity guidelines, which were the first ever to be released by the Federal Government.

According to the HHS guidelines, engaging in a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week can result in a variety of health benefits. The HHS physical activity guidelines highlight the importance of muscle strengthening and aerobic activities, as well as exercises to improve balance for older adults at risk of falling.

The key guidelines can be found at http://www.hhs.gov/news/press/2008pres/10/20081007a.html
