OIG to review independent therapists' services in 2009

Rehab Regs, October 3, 2008

The Office of Inspector General’s (OIG) work plan for fiscal year 2009 revealed that outpatient physical therapy services provided by independent therapists will be reviewed to determine if Medicare billing requirements were met.

According to the Social Security Act, Medicare is not financially responsible for any services or products that are not practical and essential to the treatment. However, OIG research has found claims for services provided by independent physical therapists that did not meet these standards or were not properly documented.
