Rehab Regs, September 26, 2008

Rehab managers master the skill of communication to ensure smooth business operations. Communication occurs on so many levels, including with employees, supervisors, patients, nonprofessional staff, physicians, social workers, family members, etc. Learning effective techniques to facilitate successful communication will help your business prosper and improve results. Effective communication also helps augment business efficiency by eliminating unnecessary downtime due to miscommunication.

To better understand effective communication, first understand what barriers exist to effective communication.

Potential barriers to effective communication:

  • Personalities
  • Personal agendas
  • Resistance to change
  • Our own ability to listen, not just to hear
  • Understanding our own emotional state

Techniques to facilitate effective communication:

  • Reading your audience
  • Using active listening
  • Don’t talk too much
  • Seek feedback
