Taxpayer money wasted on questionable Medicare claims

Rehab Regs, September 26, 2008

A recent report by Republicans on the Senate Homeland Security investigations subcommittee revealed that between 2001 and 2006 the government paid more than $1 billion in suspect Medicare claims for medical supplies, according to a September 24 article by The Associated Press.

The panel reviewed Medicare claims submitted by medical suppliers and found the government paid claims with blank or invalid diagnosis codes, such as blood glucose strips for the bubonic plague and walkers for diagnosed paraplegics. The Associated Press reported that, despite measures taken by CMS to reduce such instances of fraud and abuse, billions of taxpayer dollars have been wasted on questionable Medicare claims over the past decade.
