Treating autism: More states require insurance coverage

The services provided by PTs, OTs, and SLPs are often critical for people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), a group of developmental disabilities marked by impairment in communication and social interaction. However, many insurance companies have historically denied payment for these services.
But in recent years, several states have passed laws requiring insurance companies to provide coverage for ASD treatments, and even more are poised to pass similar laws in the upcoming legislative session, thanks to the efforts of well-organized advocacy groups such as Autism Speaks, says Ralph Kohl, state policy analyst for the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) state affairs group.
