Medicare billing scam costs govenment millions

Rehab Regs, July 25, 2008

A Congressional investigation found the federal government paid more than $92 million in Medicare claims submitted under the names of dead physicians, The Wall Street Journal reported recently.

The investigation found 478,500 claims for medical equipment and prescription drugs submitted by scam artists under dead physicians’ names received at least $92.8 million in Medicare payments between 2000 and 2007, The Journal reported. A Congressional report said CMS’ previous efforts to eliminate the payments to physicians no longer enrolled in the Medicare program were ineffective and some dead physicians still had active identification numbers in April 2008.

CMS officials said the Medicare program would start receiving the Social Security Administration’s Death Master File to update its records, according to The Journal
