Medicare bill extending therapy caps exceptions moves forward

Rehab Regs, July 11, 2008

A Medicare bill that includes a provision to extend the therapy caps exceptions process moved one step closer to becoming a law Wednesday after the U.S. Senate approved the bill 69-30.

The bill, which also contains a provision to replace a 10.6% cut to the Medicare physician fee schedule with a 1.1% increase, will now move to President George W. Bush, who has 10 days to sign the bill into law, according to information posted on the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Web site. Although the Bush administration has threatened to veto the bill, Bush is expected to sign the bill because enough members of the Congress support the bill to override a veto, according to the AOTA.

The therapy caps and cuts to the fee schedule, which went into effect July 1, will remain in effect until the bill is signed into law, according to information posted on the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Web site.
