Tip of the week
Rehab Regs, July 4, 2008
SLPs often perform assessments of aphasia (CPT code 96105) but don’t bill for it enough. SLPs will often evaluate speech, language, and communication (CPT code 92506) and then, based on the results, perform an assessment of aphasia and not bill for it. Medicare reimburses for this code at a fairly high rate. In this example, SLPs have the opportunity to perform multiple evaluations, whether it be swallowing evaluations or modified barium swallows. As always, documentation would have to support the charges and the medical necessity of performing each evaluation or assessment.
This tip is from HCPro’s book The How-To Manual for Rehab Documentation: A Complete Guide to Increasing Reimbursement and Reducing Denials.
