Investigation finds Medicare providers owe billions in back taxes
Rehab Regs, June 27, 2008
A Government Accountability Office (GAO) investigation revealed 27,000 Medicare providers in a variety of settings failed to pay more than $2 billion in federal taxes in 2006, the Wall Street Journal reported June 20.
Congress members are pushing CMS to allow the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to withhold government payments to contractors that owe taxes, according to the Journal. CMS officials have said starting in October they will subject 60% of Medicare fee-for-service payments to the IRS to examine for tax delinquencies.
