ASHA asks politicians to use evidence to guide autism policy

Rehab Regs, June 20, 2008

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) recently urged presidential candidates Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama to take an evidence-based approach to understanding the causes of autism and creating public policy related to autism care, according an ASHA press release.

The association sent letters to the candidates this month in response to an article published in The Washington Post, which reported both candidates have suggested links between autism and preservatives used in vaccines, according to the press release. The article also reported the body of scientific evidence has not proven links between autism and vaccine preservatives.

ASHA’s letter noted the daily experiences of SLPs, who know the importance of evidence-based practice, can guide the “autism conversation,” and urged the candidates to “strongly consider the critical need for evidence-based practice.”
