New law brings Colorado OTs closer to licensure

Rehab Regs, May 30, 2008

A new law will require Colorado OTs to verify they have met specific education, experience, and exam requirements by registering with the state’s Department of Regulatory Agencies, according to a recent American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) press release.

The law, which goes into effect July 1, sets a firm standard for therapists and moves them closer to licensure, according to the AOTA’s release.

Colorado’s regulatory laws were an “insurmountable roadblock” to the Occupational Therapy Association of Colorado’s attempts to gain licensure for OTs, so the association reached a compromise with the Department of Regulatory Agencies by creating the registry law, the AOTA’s release said. Unlike some other registry laws, the Colorado law protects both the title “occupational therapist” and the practice of OT.
