Study tests whether more muscle mass helps diabetics
Rehab Regs, May 16, 2008
Researchers at the University of Utah’s Department of Physical Therapy will test whether building muscle mass helps diabetics better process glucose, or blood sugar, and reverse the course of diabetes, The Salt Lake Tribune reported April 25.
The university will enroll 10 people ages 60 to 80 in a year-long study, according to the Tribune. Researchers will study whether building lean muscle mass will help diabetics store more glucose in their muscles. The participants will build lean muscle mass over a three-month period by using an Eccentron machine, similar in design to a recumbent bicycle, for 30 minutes two or three times a week.
