CMS releases new transmittal extending plan of care recertification
Rehab Regs, May 9, 2008
On Wednesday, CMS released Transmittal 88/ Change Request 5921, which provides guidance on new regulations for therapy services, including personnel qualifications and timing of recertification of plans of care (POC).
The transmittal changes the amount of time contractors may require recertification of POCs for outpatient PT, OT, and SLP services from 30 to 90 days, allowing patients who need more than 30 days of therapy to continue treatment without visiting a physician. New or significantly modified POCs require recertification every 30 days.
The transmittal’s effective date is January 1, 2008 and its implementation date is June 9, 2008.
