Uninsured patients causing U.S. healthcare costs to rise
Rehab Regs, April 4, 2008
A report issued by the New America Foundation estimates the cost to the U.S. economy for caring for the uninsured was between $102 and $204 billion dollars in 2006, according to AHA News Now.This cost is equal to or greater than the public cost of paying to cover them, according to the report issued by the Washington, DC-based non-profit public policy think tank.
This estimate, based on numbers projected in 2000 by the Institute of Medicine, was reached by updating those numbers for the growth in the economy and the increase of the uninsured population. The estimate does not include the costs incurred by the insured population for spillover costs, a term used when medical bills go unpaid and providers try to compensate by raising rates for their services, causing insurance providers to raise premiums.
