Court papers filed against rehab facility for improperly discarding patient information

Rehab Regs, January 25, 2008

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbot is accusing Select Physical Therapy, a rehabilitation facility in Levelland, TX, of throwing approximately 4,000 pieces of patient information into the garbage behind its office, according to a January 10 Associated Press article in the Houston Chronicle. The information included Social Security numbers, names, addresses, telephone number, bank account numbers, and medical information.

Select Medical Corp, owner of the now-closed rehabilitation facility, is cooperating with the investigation, spokeswoman Carolyn Curnane told the AP. "Safeguarding the protected health information and personal information of all patients is a top priority at our company," she says. "We recognize that any breach in patient confidentiality is an extremely serious matter."
