Therapy helps reduce elderly falls
Rehab Regs, January 18, 2008
Physical therapy interventions may help reduce the risk of falls among seniors 65 years and older, according to an American Physical Therapy Association press release. Older females are at a greater risk of falling. Other risk factors associated with falls include balance and walking impairment, poor vision, dementia, pre-existing medical conditions, and a past history of falls.
Therapists play a role in fall prevention by screening patients for balance problems and designing exercise plans and activities that focus on strength, flexibility, and proper gait, according to the release.
