Irish Trust ordered to make OTs more available

Rehab Regs, May 28, 2001

Therapy patients in the United States don't know how lucky they are to be able to see a therapist virtually any time they want. Recently the Craigavon and Banbridge Community HSS Trust, a hospital group in Belfast, Ireland, was ordered to apologize to its occupational therapy patients and increase its therapy practices throughout the mid-Ulster area. An independent panel, convened specifically to investigate one patient's complaint, issued the decision. While the one complaint prompted this investigation, the panel was astounded to find that up to 20 similar complaints per week from other patients were being reported. "The strain and stress upon the small group of occupational therapists charged with handling an enormous workload was clearly evident to the panel and they are to be commended for their efforts in handling an almost impossible situation," the panel told the Belfast News Letter.
