Jeffords move could boost ergonomics legislation
Rehab Regs, May 28, 2001
Even some dyed-in-the-wool Republican therapists may soon find a silver lining in the dark cloud created when Senator James Jeffords (I-VT) left the Republican party. This will switch power from a Republican-controlled Congress to one controlled by the Democrats. Bill Samuel, legislative director at the AFL-CIO in Washington, told the Boston Herald that legislation to require businesses to provide ergonomically safe workplaces would be helped by Jeffords move since the Democrat-controlled Senate would be able to introduce legislation and rebuff attempts to overturn legislation through filibustering. Earlier this year, the Bush administration repealed rules put forth by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration that would have required employers to take extensive steps to limit injuries to workers from such repetitive tasks as typing and stocking shelves.
